All types of organizations have the potential to be affected by a data breach or other cyber threat. No organization is truly immune, however, there are preventative steps that you can take to help minimize your risk in this area and protect your electronic data and devices. There are two main types of security measures that you can work on: physical security, and computer security.
Physical security is crucial to protecting your data. Some data safety tips include: shredding paperwork that contain personally identifiable information, securing your building with locks and alarms, storing records in locked cabinets, limiting access to sensitive information, and training your office staff on how to protect the privacy and confidentiality of personal information.
Computer security is equally as important as physical security when it comes to protecting data. Computers are particularly vulnerable to theft, especially when they are connected to the internet. Hackers are becoming more sophisticated, so you need to make sure that your computers are secure. Some computer security methods include limiting access to passwords, keeping your software up-to-date, having a reliable firewall installed, securing your wireless network, keeping up with your anti-virus software, scanning for malicious software, and fine-tuning your browser settings.
